Johan Schäfer

Johan Schäfer (born 1981 in Hamburg) combines his motifs, often based on everyday objects, with the exaggerated and sometimes perverse use of images in the advertising and media industry. With this provocative mixture and a good pinch of humor, Schäfer confronts the seriousness of the world. With a playful approach to the development of his works, the artist manages to capture absurdities in a unique way.

In his more recent works, Schäfer is also increasingly concerned with the isolation of objects from their usual environment. In doing so, Schäfer embarks on a journey of discovery through surreal-looking landscapes consisting of everyday objects. The play with the format of his works is of central importance.

After studying in Hamburg, Dresden and at the Universidad de Bellas Artes in Barcelona, Schäfer currently lives and works in Leipzig. Until 2016, Schäfer was a master student under Prof. Peter Bömmels.
