Ghosts & Guardians: Mate Orr

What connects these paintings is a tension between hardness and vulnerability. The crocodiles’ tough scales and razor-sharp teeth contrast with their innocent play around the fountain or the muscles of the man being helplessly pushed into a hole by two fragile waterbirds. I am particularly drawn to depictions of vulnerability because this quality runs counter to the control traditionally expected of men. For me, however, it is essential to seeing our true selves without denial. An honest self-understanding forms the basis for closeness in relationships, resilience in the face of setbacks, and, ultimately, a more balanced emotional life. The emotional dynamics within these scenes are my way of redefining vulnerability not as weakness but as profound strength.
