Galerie SOON is delighted to newly represent US artist Tavar Zawacki as a gallery artist.
Zawacki is considered one of the pioneers of the global street art movement. His iconic "ABOVE" arrow, which he first placed in the streets of Paris in 2001 and from there all over the world, was the beginning of a great career. During a period of 20 years, ABOVE's playful, colorful artworks were seen in over 100 cities in 50 countries around the world. For twenty years (1996-2016), the artist created and signed all his artworks with his street artist pseudonym ABOVE. In January 2017, Zawacki decided to perform under his real name. This "coming out" already took place in 2016 at a solo exhibition at Galerie SOON in Zurich, where visitors stood in line for up to two hours.
Zawacki's style draws on Minimalism, color field painting, among others, and his work enters into dialogue with the visual language of artists such as Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly. Zawacki has exhibited internationally since 2005, including in New York, Berlin, San Francisco, Zurich, Sydney, Milan and Paris. In addition to many large-scale murals around the world, Tavar's mural for the U.S. Open in Miami has caused a major stir. In 2019, Zawacki was commissioned by the Albright Knox Museum in New York to paint the largest mural of his career called Metamorphosis #5 as part of a public art initiative at the museum. That same year, the artist created a limited edition football for the Super Bowl in collaboration with Wilson (sporting goods manufacturer) and the NFL (National Football League). Today Tavar Zawacki lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.
